16––––––––ONE NIGHT

My eyes bore into his uncomfortably, seeking understanding. I couldn’t help but wonder if this was a ploy to have me forgive his foolishness or if he was flirting.

It was impossible to tell which, but I refused to be toyed with either way. “It’s late and I have an early morning. Please take me to my quarters for the evening.”

“Where do you have to be that you can’t enjoy this one night?”

“I have very important business to attend to.”

“In Sparaka? If that’s the case, I should accompany you.”

“Ni!” I spat with instant regret. “I mean, it’s not necessary. I already have Nontu.” My hands pressed together. Whatever he was trying to do to me with his easy smile, sparkling eyes, and whatever spellbinding scent he was wearing had to be ignored. “Now, where will I be sleeping?”

“As you wish. I’ll show you.” Jamil turned sharply, marched through the crowded area, and back towards the stairs. He went down to the middle landing and opened a door to the side, revealing a large suite. “This is where I’d normally have my quarters, but tonight, it’s all yours.” He gestured for me to enter.

“And you? Where will you sleep?”

“Not very likely I will before this little space is open again. It’s very comfortably appointed and sound-proofed. He entertains here rather frequently and energetically.”

He’d shifted to the more formal tone, the one he used when he chose to distance himself.

“I have a question for you, and I want you to be serious. No games, Jamil.”

“I’m a little offended, but alright. What is your question?” He leaned against the door jam, arms folded into one another.

“How did you beat that syte?”

His eyes pinched together as if trying to figure something out. “Is this a trick question? A test or something?”

“Ni. I told you to be serious and no games. How’d you win?”

“I already told you. You helped me.”

“For the love of Faduwata, Jamil! Can you not find a way to be serious even when I ask you point blank?”

There was no way I’d helped him, not knowingly. And if I had, why should he benefit from my magic when I couldn’t?

Jamil checked up the stairs to see if my exclamation had drawn eyes. Then he stepped all the way inside the door, his stare intense. My neck flushed warmly as I held myself steady, waiting for a sensible explanation.

“I don’t know what you want me to say. In fact, I don’t know what you want, period. I answered your question. You are the reason I won.”

“Fine. If you want to stick with that. You could’ve said your magic works. That somehow you tuned in with time to spare to that vennan. But...I don’t know what you’re up to,” I fumed.

His eyelids flapped repeatedly, and his mouth opened and shut several times as he shook his head and then tapped the open door.

“None of that happened. I don’t know what else you want me to say.”

“Good night, Jamil. I’ll be gone by the time you wake but please give Olug my thanks for our accommodations this evening.
